The Swann SW244-8MP is an 8 channel digital video recorder, the system usually ships with 8 surveillance cameras included with its contents. The DVR is also available in a package that includes four cameras and an LCD monitor, if your premises is large or you want to set up surveillance cameras in multiple positions the 8 camera package is the best deal as LCD monitors are relatively cheap in comparison to four security cameras. The DVR is compatible with both PAL and NTSC video signals and at maximum it can record video at a speed of 120 frames per second.
PAL mode offers a slightly lower maximum recording speed than NTSC mode that being 100 frames per second, inside the system is a 250 gigabyte Seagate hard drive for storing camera footage. The creators of the DVR, 'Swann', state you can record a whole months worth of video footage on the system with the included hard drive. Your not stuck with this however as you can attach up to three 500 gigabyte internal hard drives to the system, you can also attach external storage devices to the security recorder for further video storage.
The recorder can be connected to either a monitor or a standard television in order to monitor the feed from your surveillance cameras. You can use the DVR to set up a two way communication system as it has both audio inputs and outputs, the problem here is you can only set up one such system as there is only one audio output, in total the DVR has two audio inputs. Audio streams recorded by the system are compressed along with video, the system uses G.726 audio compression and H.264 (MPEG-4 DMX-V3) video compression
You can set the DVR to record video 24 hours a day if necessary, you also have the option to use the DVR's motion detection functions to control recording. By using motion detection you can ensure your security system only records surveillance camera footage when there is actual activity within a room, motion detection recording also uses less space than continuous recording. You can also connect external alarms to the SW244-8MP so if you have sensor activated alarms on your premises you can attach them to the system, it will start recording video when it detects the device has been triggered.
A search facility is built in to the DVR that gives you various means of finding specific video footage, you can use the facility to search for video based on the date or time of a recorded occurrence. The DVR also logs activities such as motion detection and alarm activation as events and you can select one of the log entries to find recorded surveillance camera footage.
